At its head, the concentric circles of the Sun and horns of the Moon are intertwined. Together, they have the form of winged Mercury. The shaft is the cross of the elements, and at its foot is a crest representing the ceremonial fire.
The Monad is an Elizabethan Alchemical sigil, designed (or discovered) by famed court magician and scientist, John Dee. The intricacies and virtues of this symbol are explored in feverish detail in Dee's 16th Century grimoire, the Monas Hieroglyphica. The 24 theorems within describe how this simple symbol embodied secrets which united all existing sciences, and had the power to revolutionize mathematics, linguistics, and music, as well as the magical arts.
Though the lessons may be esoteric, it is easy to grasp the profound beauty of the symbol, representing the quest of both artists and scientists alike to understand this world and its powers, to unite its languages, and find harmony therein.
The Monad is hand cast in bronze and expertly finished to a deep antique patina. It is also available in Sterling Silver.
It measures 1.5 inches / 3.5cm in length.
Includes brass chain.
